Just finished listening to the latest HVAC School podcast with Aprilaire. One thing I wish they’d gone into a little more detail on is filter media loft—not the overall filter depth (3”, 4”, 5”, etc.), but the actual thickness of the media itself. We use Aprilaire filters in our company and have been really impressed with their quality and dust-holding capacity. It almost seems like they reach a certain pressure drop and then barely increase from there. Compare that to a typical thin-media pleated MERV 8 filter, which doesn’t seem capable of holding nearly as much particulate by weight. I’d love to see a Project Farm-style comparison of high-loft MERV 13 filters versus conventional thin-media pleated filters, measuring pressure drop against the cumulative weight of particulate captured. My suspicion is that high-loft media would exhibit a relatively flat pressure-drop curve over a much greater amount of accumulated particulate, while conventional thin-media filters would show a much steeper increase in resistance as they load. I’d love to see those curves plotted side by side. Is anyone aware of an existing study that’s looked at this? If not, who wants to take it on? https://youtu.be/RkjRKIRva58?is=NB11AhTC9dYsM5tX
