Poor contact can cause the connections to get hot, which leads to premature failure over time, even causing the wiring or terminals to melt. To tighten the connection, we tighten the spades ever so slightly with a pair of pliers or something similar. The spades should connect to the terminals a bit more snugly and make better contact.
