Pressure vs. Temperature Explained: The Key to Diagnosing Any Refrigerant System

Most technicians can tell you the pressure on a system. Far fewer can tell you what that pressure actually means — and that's exactly where diagnostics fall apart.

In this video, Ty Branaman breaks down one of the most important concepts in refrigeration: why saturated temperature is the key to diagnosing any refrigerant system, regardless of what refrigerant you’re working with. It starts with something everyone understands — tire pressure — to show why pressure alone is never the full picture. The same tire, the same truck, can read 45 psi or 90 psi and both be completely correct depending on the conditions. Refrigerant systems work the same way.

Once you understand how to convert saturation pressure into a saturated temperature, everything changes. It doesn’t matter if you’re working with R-410A, R-454B, R-32, R-22, or any of the dozens of refrigerants technicians are dealing with today. The moment you have a saturated temperature, you have something you can actually work with. If that temperature is below the air temperature entering the coil, the system is absorbing heat. If it’s above the air temperature, it’s rejecting heat. That relationship is the foundation of the entire refrigeration cycle — and once it clicks, diagnosing systems becomes a completely different experience.

This is the kind of fundamental knowledge that separates technicians who guess from technicians who truly understand what a system is doing at any given moment.
