Detecting Surface Moisture w/ Testo Smart Probes

Bryan with HVAC School detects surface moisture using tools from the new expanded Testo Smart Probes Case. We show how you can use the Testo Smart Probes to detect the surface dewpoint and prevent moisture issues before they start.

The Testo Smart Probes now have a mold indication feature on the 605i thermo-hygrometers and 805i infrared thermometers. The Testo 605i can measure wet-bulb temperature, dry-bulb temperature, dew point, and relative humidity. Inside the Testo Smart Probes app, select the “mold indication” feature. Edit the view to make sure the interface is showing the correct measurement units for your market (for example, degrees Fahrenheit in the USA). You can also add values manually if you go to the “Configure measurement” setting.

When you begin pointing the 805i at a surface and measuring with the 605i, the bar on the top of the screen will change color depending on the mold risk. A green bar indicates that the infrared thermometer’s surface is safe. You can also change the material of the surface within the app, as mold forms on wood under different circumstances as it does on concrete. A yellow bar indicates moderate risk, and a red bar indicates a high risk of a moisture problem.
